Who had the best week ever?

Picture_424This is the age of Capricorn, this fact means its a time to build, start businesses, create organization and change the world. Goats teach us that hard work lends results and we all can benefit if we all work together. My week started like most, Monday was a correspondence day. I answered mail, paid bills and cleaned my altar. Tuesday was sPicture_427_4hopping day, Wednesday was a Capricorn Celebration at Club Eazy. Happy Birthday JB, Melo and Roopa. We got our groove on, smoke on, laugh on and dance on that night. Thursday was back to business and some good connections were made. A nice person told me I was sexy and asked for my phone number( that was special). Friday my homegirl Erika Newport tPicture_430ook me to the Red Sea for some Ethiopian food. The service sucked but my food was good. We came back to my house for some reality TV and a few more laughs. Saturday I spent most of the day working on the magazine but come night fall I was hob knobbin with the A-Listers of the LGBT community. We were celebrating the Inauguration of Mayor Ron Dellums.  I saw Barbara Lee, De La Fuente, Jewel Gomez and many other LGBT notables. Most people know that Dells wasn't my first choice of mayor but now that he's in I've jPicture_435oined the rest of the clan in solidarity to help Dellums prevail. This celebration was something out of a movie. People dressed to the nines, an all womens band played dance music, a no host bar, potatoes in martini glasses, a chocolate fountain, and three tables full of temping treats. People were marveling over all of the decadence. Dellums gave a wonderful speech repeating his campaign jargon. "With the dePicture_431dication and resilience of my generation and the passion and the drive of your generation there is nothing we can't accomplish" then he lovingly introduced his wife who let us know that it was with her desire that he become mayor of Oakland, not out of need but out of necessity. The highlight of the evening was when the youth took to the dancefloor. Me and the young ladies of Mills College started the electric slide and the crowd went ballistic. Then we broke into a soul train line that allowed the entire multi-ethnic and multi-generational crowd to be Picture_446 uplifted and celebrated. We wore that party out and smiles and happy faces was well worth the pain in my feet today. At around 10 that evening I left the Dellums celebration with the lovely women of The Nursha Project. Butterfly productions was having their grand opening of their newest club the "W." From now on the second Saturday of the month this club offers hip hop. house music on one level and Latin music on the second. Lovely Latinas came out in droves to dance in pairs upstairs. It was a night to remember and for me the end of my best week ever.

Passing the Torch

Veronica C. Combs is on a plane this morning following her ansestors call. We wish her safe voyage on this new journey. Australia just ain't ready....but they better get ready cuz she's on her way.

Picture_331 The Last Call Perfomance served a few purposes: It gave those who knew a glimse of what we had, for new commers it gave you an idea of what we are loosing. The history of Luna Sea and Liquid Fire was clarified. For toppers and tearjerk purposes testimonies were  added inbwtween performances so poeple could say how there lives were changed and just how much she is loved. Before it was all over everyone was moved sexually, emotionally, and politically.

In the afterglow you just wanted to rejoyce in the celebration of this icon, revel in her work, languish in the possibilities of whats to come....and then it hits you. Its over! Liqiud Fire is over. You can feel the violating gaping whole thats Picture_326 left behind. Who will be responbible fo creating space for queer women of color. Who will be the teacher of releasing your erotic power on the world, who will produce quality perfomances that are moving, sexy and exciting.

The torch is burning who will take this on?

Tricks and Treats

Its thaPicture_268t time of year when my mojo really get workin'. Its a magical time and once the good witch starts making her brew aint no tellin whats gonna happen. I did my grieving to Yemaya. I gave her my problems and let them go in faith that I will be provided for. Once I was done with my spritual stuff I went and got ready to celebrate holloween with a little help from my friends.

Picture_264  Trick #1 I went to a holloween party and the winner of the best costume goes to Super Nigga not only did he don a cape with the red, gold and green insignia he had the nerve to wear crush velvet underware with gold dollar signs sewn on them. The best part of his costume was the giant size weed sack that was full of superpowers. He was kind enough to give me one. Anb hour later after my powers kicked in I was able to withstand long bouts of dancing in a single bound.

Treat # 1 Judy is a damn good Dj. she was mixin' her mutha fu*kin a** off.

Picture_265 Trick # 2 I'm thinking that this girl I'm dancing with is feelin me....I find out later that I was the stand in until the one she was feelin' came to the party. My superpower repelled the pain of rejection...Thank goodness for that.

Treat $ 2 the party favors were little bags of chinese candies. What a pleasant surprise. I lived near china town for ten years and knew all the treats well but its been almost two years since I moved so I hadn't seen any ot these in a while....thanks ladies.

Treat # 3 I get to take my kids trick-or-treating. I can't wait to take out all the good pieces for myself.

Trick # 3 my teeth are gonna pay for this madness. I might as well go on and make an appointment.

Picture_267Happy Holloween....tell me did u get more tricks or treats?

The last One

ProfileHello happy readers this is the last personal post from your editor. Its time that I pack up my complicated life and wild opinion and put them on the shelf. The print version of this magazine is a month or two away form reaching your hands and now I have to leave the comforts of my bedroom and be Miss Business Bushmama instead of your sistahgirlfriend that dished out all her problems and aired all my dirty laundry in the name of radical journalism. I do realize that some of you really hate or really enjoy my personal stories so I will oblige you once more and give you all I've got. And as I step over the line into Business-hood trust and know that I will sneak in some insider dish from time to time in the print version and my alter ego Shockadelica will take over as the dish server because she can handle the heat when people get upset about the postings. I've got to spend all my extra time trying to find staff and money to keep both of these much loved ideas rolling so with no further ado here goes...... The last one.

Lets call this posting Love Me because that's whats up for me right now. I just left church and the sermon today was on Non profit love...ponder on that for a minute.

I thought to myself the other day that I give to my community, I'm a good mother to my kids. I'm kind to their father even though he hates anything queer and I love everything queer. I'm starting to feel the crust of getting older without loosing touch with the youth that is still brewing deep inside me. I'm also bursting out of seams of my being with passion and love and I have no one in which to share it with. I'm in a rut with the company I keep because most of my friends either have someone they are with or dating somebody or just find and dandy with being alone and that just doesn't work for me. The Bushmama machine works best when I'm being persued, loved on and sexed down on a regular. Its like a car that needs oil. I don't run good without it and I'm starting to see the results when I look in the mirror. I'm replacing love with food, kissing with tv, cuddling with my computer. I hardly dance anymore and I've even lost my long time addiction with shopping......now that's just down right obscene. I was born to shop and look cute for the girls, boys and most importantly myself. Now I have to say that the last few offers I've had to date were tempting but I had to say no because I'm trying hard not to inter relationships based on loneliness and not a real affection or attraction to someone. Don't you just hate when people do that? Then you see them 3 weeks later and you ask what happened to you and so-in-so and they give you some dry answer or you actually see so-in-so and they are made at you because I happen to be friends with the one who just broke their heart. Well I'm not joining that club or that pity party. I just want a nice, exciting youthful but not young person in my life to dance with, shop with, cuddle with and make love to when I'm not stuck at home changing diapers and checking homework. I don't think that's a lot to ask. I'm not trying to get married or nothing just some harmless fun with someones who appreciates romance and happy silences. Who could be just as happy reading in a coffee shop as they would in the mountains under the stars telling each other their dreams.

I do have to say that like everyone else my life has its share of drama and yes I do have some shit to deal with but I've learned how to keep my shit at bay without it smellin up the rest of my life. I've been told that there are people who find me interesting and sexy...I'm dying to find out who yall are. I'd love to take you out for some Thai food or and independent film or maybe we can dance the night away I'm just saying why stand back and wonder I'm here and waiting just say something you might be pleasantly surprised what you might find under my hat.....so long for now happy reading Bush~

Oh yeah back to non profit love...it means loving everyone without expecting to get anything in return. Love just for the pleasure of loving....its something to think about...I'm trying it out right now with the drug dealers on my block, the neighbors that no longer hang out with me and all homophobic people pray that they grow tolerant because we ain't going no where.

P.S. my new personal profile is now at: www.myspace.com/bushmama

Thanks...Femme Conference

Queerwmn I want to personally thank the organizers for creating an opportunity for courageous, fabulous, sexy, accomplished, dynamic women and trans-men to get together. I was only able to make the last day of the conference but my conversations with participants proved what a great conference this was. They were quick to tell me how fabulous Jewel Gomez was and this performance and that performance was so hot.  I can tell you that I saw a lot of women from other states that I wish were staying here. I went to one workshop called a Fly In The Milk where we talked about being a WC in a sea of whiteness. We discussed how we gain visibility and went deep with topics like sistahood, sistah codes and rules amongst ourselves. To add spice to the mix there were butches and white women in the room who added their two cents, or just quietly observed the femmes go on about their life experiences. There was one Asian butch woman in the room that made my heart stop because she was so fine. It took everything in my power not to get all in her mix. I reminded my self that I wasn't here for pleasure. I was working so that I could come back and report to you. Once I gained composure I was able to engage in conversation and jot down notes for this article.

Femmcon I learned a lot in that workshop. I realized that letting the fear of rejection go will allow me to acknowledge my sisters when I see them and not take it personally if they feel that threatened by me. I learned that we must create space for other femmes in our lives and most importantly we must create safe spaces for our femme friends and allys to perform. to talk, to hang and be free from judgment and ridicule. There was also a discussion on how to build commuity for ourselves here are the rules: be inclusive(no dyke click sh*t), valadate each other, have direct eye contact with other women (no downcasting looks), honor each other, ask(don't assume anything), listen activly and don't be afraid to complement each other.

Picture_151 The rest of the day was filled with juicy conversations about who we are dating, who we want to date, plans for the future, and sex politics. I had a wonderful time, I encourage all queer women to go to a Femme conference or festival. I've decided to create a WOC Festival/Conference next year in Oakland. Those interested in joining the planning committee or presenting a workshop should email me asap.

Missing In Action

Blk_gurl I've been at home taking care of the baby and creating a new one. This new baby will be this magazine in print. I've finally finished a copy and now I'm working on getting it printed up and distributed to you. There is lots of work involved and I have been workin' day and night.

So if you are wondering why I haven't posted in a while.....thats why.

A babies story

Where have you been? thats what most people say when they see me these days. Some even say you had a baby? What? I didn't even know you were pregnant. Well that was last year. And this year will no doubt be full of surprise that I will give and get. For thoes that did know here is the story.

Its January 1st, I finished my ghetto New Years meal of fried chicken, blackeyed peas, rice and gravy, cornbread and cabbage. I sat back in my comfy chair to relax and I felt a gush.   There was a pool large spot of liquid on the seat. I wasn't sure what to think at first so I just got up in a cool calm and collected manner. I walked slowly to the bathroom where the rest of the waters poured from my belly on to the floor. I called my ride to the hosDsci0003_2pital.  When we got to the hospital they wisked me away to the labor and delivery floor.  After 10 hours labor that poured over into the next day Omani Nejah Malik was born January 2nd 2006.  The most beautiful sight was brought to me for kisses and a hug and then he was taken away to childrens hospital. They tried to explain gently that he has a few problems that can be fixed but you will not be able to see your baby again until you are released from the hospital. This was the hardest week I've ever spent in my life. To bond with your child while in the womb for 9 months, waiting to see that face, kiss that face, hear that cry, give your milk and change that diaper all taken away.  Heatbreaking is the only word that can explain how I felt. Now that I'm out of the hospital and I am with my son everyday. He is facing three different major surgeries that are terrifying for any parent to think of. My little man is a trouper and he has recovered well for the first two he has already had. Right now all we do is wait while he grows to prepare for the next one. He is still in the hospital but making progress. The bond we share is tougher than leather and we both are happy as can be when we are in each others sight. Keep our family in your prayers so that we can continue to be blessed. I feel confident that he will be fine. Dsci0005_5

I am working on creating a foundation that will help other parents with children in the hospitals for long stays. There is a need for financial help because there is always one parent who can't work to be with the baby. This causes a financial strain and I want to create a surplus to help out in small ways like a free lunch, a message, free childcare for the siblings, art therapy to deal with the illness or death of a sibling, free bus passes or cab fare, free hotel stays for parents who live far from the hospital and want to be closer to their child.  Since I've became a part of that group I've discovered all types of problems parents face when their child is in the hospital that could easily be solved by a few donated dollars. Anyone with tips and ideas on how to start a foundation (make it legal) and interested in donating or volunteering services please let me know asap.

DREADLOCKS

Fly_locks As we welcome the new year a lot of us decide that its finally time to lock it up.

The questions :

How much? How long will it take? What if I don't like it. Do have have to shave my head? What if I have a perm now? Why can't I wash my hair? What products can I use on my hair? And so on and so on. I can answer all these questions and more. Your local loctician is never too far from you. I'm just a call away.

Rasta History has taught me how people who were enslaved became free when they decided to remove themselves from regular society and went into the hills to study and pray. They fished and picked fruit to live. These were the first people I knew of that had locks, The Rastas in Jamaica. Then I learned about the holy men of India who also speSadhusnd all their time devoted to God. They grow locks too. Now I know of people all over the world who are locked up. This reinforced my decision to grow locks, cut them off just to grow them back.  In this country many of us want to embrace our natural beauty. We don't want to be defined by societies version of what beauty is. It took ten years but now you can't pass a corner in Oakland without seeing someone who has locks. They are red, gold and green. They are orange and black. Long_locksThey are black and blond. Dreadlocks are being grown in every way imaginable and I thinks its great. I do hate that the new recruits have no spiritual or naturalist connection with their decision but they are doing something that is completely African. Thats one step in the positive. Some of us are deeply connected to the earth and trying to save her. Haircare products made by manufacturers are harder and harder to remove from our water supply. These chemicals are kilPrayng_locksling off our natural resource, going natural is the one thing we can control that will decrease the pollution of water. Each one of us taking one small step could help to change the world.

The answers:

Locking up is easy. Your hair can be short or long, straight, wavy, kinky or thin. if you got hair, I can lock it up.

If you have a perm you will need to grow it out or cut it out.

The cost is between $40-60 depending on the condition of your hair.

It takes about 1-3 hours to start locks depending on how long your hair is.

It takes 3 months to a year for your hair to lock for good depending on the texture of your hair.

Yes locks can be dyed. I recommend henna or any other natural dying product.

Yes locks can be curled, styled, braided and set for an elegant or classy look. Its still just hair.

No you don't have to cut locks of it you want them out. There is a pick out method using a lot of conditioner and a certain kind of pick to take them down. However it is costly and time consuming.

No you don't have to shave your head. If you have a head full of natural hair. I can still start your locks no matter how long it is.  The process to start is a little tweaked but the out come is the same.

Washing your hair a lot in the beginning retards the locking process and makes the final product take longer. But you can still wash your hair.

Natural products are the best to use. To tell the truth it takes absolutely no products to start and keep locks. Its our desire to have them look, feel and smell a certain way that keeps us in the market looking for stuff. I can help you find some nice things to use that don't hurt mama earth.Sprout_locks

With that said open your eyes to your new fabulous natural self. Say Ashe and be proud of this new journey I like to call self love.

If you have paid more than $60 for a lock appointment then you paid too much. My services are in my home or yours. No hair shop drama or noise. No one will try to sell you stuff. You won't ever have to wait until someone else is done. Your appointment is yours alone.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Bushmama finally finds a home!

M_and_c  I felt like Mary, the pregnant version, going from place to place just to lay down and birth the baby Jesus, where she was turned down again and again until finally she found a barn to lay in. Couldn't they tell that not having a home was extremely stressful?  Couldn't they tell that if I've lived in the same place for 10 years I can obviously pay rent? Couldn't they see my belly full of life and in need of rest?

I hate to say it but all the white people said no and the black people said yes. Now that yes came with a price. About $220 dollars more than I wanted to pay and a couple of G's down to prove I was really serious.  I also get the to be in a hood where people still sell crack out in the open and dope fiends are out in the day instead of the night.

The pluses are I have friends on the block which means instant community, Its quiet at night so I can study and rest. And best of all, I have enough space inside the house for family life and business life. I'm back in Oakland where I always should be and I can get back to everything I love. My friends, the artist community, events, and the occasional parties that I love to give during the winter months.

Oshun1Oshun's Winter Soulstice Gathering/Baby Shower  (December 17th 5pm - until....) will be a potluck and a housewarming where people can check the new spot and bring me candles, towels, plants and whatever else makes a house warm. In return you get succulent spiced drinks, intoxicating desserts and some creamy homemade mac n cheese. Don't be scared if you are asked to create something while you are there, prepare to take your shoes off when you get there and bring somebody that will add to the fun if you can.Oshunaltar

Im not hatin', but.....

Katrina_1 I've been literally homeless for a month now and I haven't found a righteous landlord yet.  I know they exist. Everyone of my good friends have places that they've acquired with little to no problem. Where is my peace and comfort?

Two This is not a want its a necessity. I will literally be bringing life into this world in three months, setting up a home base is essential. I've watched hurricane victims come to Oakland and set their lives up for a fresh new start and I'm glad for them. I just think I'm long overdue it the "I need a home" line. Send your prayers out for me and my family cuz my patients is runnin' thin.

"a change is gon' come, oh yes it will..."

In other news....

Bbabies Did you hear the quote about less black babies....less crime?

Did you watch the season opener of Nip / Tuck? (why do men get all the fun in a threesome? or Do they?)

Bag2 Whats the latest must have for winter in your fashion closet?

Boots_1

Whats is the best way to ask someone one a date?

Need a Locktician or someone to work with your natural tresses?

Looking for a gig to recite poetry, exhibit artwork, or sing?

Come back friday for answers to these questions.. feel free to send me your answers and comments. I'll gladly post them on Tuesday

Peace and Love Bushmama~

Oakland Refugee affected by Katrina

Katrina I'm in shock when when I think of the crisis down south; Louisiana, New Orleans, and anywhere else Katrina hit and hurt people. I think about how I was contemplating moving to New Orleans in January. I wanted a change and the folklore mystified and excited me. Now nothing is there. The people and the history that lived are going to be very hard to find now. My family is from Louisiana. My grandmother died before I was born so I was going to have to rely on the inhabitants there to give me history, and stories and show me the way to the swamps. I had it all planned out. But life changes in the split of  a second especially when you are not looking and now here we are. Here I am displaced for my history and my home. In January I was gentrified out of my building where I have lived for 10 years. I concieved and raised my daughter in that community and we were booted out because we are black. We haven't found a home yet. Just temporary places to sleep an eat until we find a home. Its been really hard and with another baby on the way (due in December) I need a home fast. I need to nest as all new mothers would do and prepare my mind, body and soul for the new life I'm giving to the world. I want to cry everytime I get a rejection from a new landlord. Most of the time its the money, they just want too damn much to move in. As a full time student and out of work my funds are limited but I do have friends and Loveones who watch out and take care of me. My clothes are clean and I have food to eat. I have it all compared to a family of the same size and makeup in New Orleans. I have blessing to count because I have faith that my situation is temporary but many will live in doubt for months on end. I want to ask for help but I feel foolish when so many have so little yet I am also in desperate need of a home. My job is to bring you the news, the artist and the events that add so much to our lives but its hard to do when so much stress and frustration is weighing heavy on ones heart.  In the next couple of post I will give information about grassroots orgs. that want to help the people directly so look out for that. Until then I ask all of my readers to give. Give to thoes you see and thoes you can't. They are waiting for you.

Bushmama Is Out!!!

Dsci0004_7  I've been out of the office since my birthday collecting stories and hobbnobbin' with queer artist so that I could come back and share all of the business with ya'll.  My first stop was at the Voices of Our Nation Arts Foundation workshop. I had the pleasure of working with some of the best writers of color who have novels pending and perfomances lined up from here to New York. 14 differents states and three countries were represented this year and the participants told me that this program was unbelievable and necessary for them. Their instructors were: Willie Perdomo of the Performance Poetry workshop. He has numerous works floating around and many great selling books of poetry on the market. He was a hit last year on Russell Simmons Poetry Jam. ZZ Packer with her pregnant self ran around Dsci0015like a non-pregnant women while she taught the novel workshop. Participants had the honor of working with such an accomplished author and she enjoyed herself as well. Other instructors were Elmaz Abinader who taught memoir and residency, Suheir Hammad who taught poetry(www.suheirhammad.com), Junot Diaz, Jimmy Santiago Baca, and so on and so on. It was fabulous to get to know all of them. I appreciated their warmth and laughter and hugs I got regularly.  To learn more about The Voices Summer Writing Workshop for writers of color please go to (www.vona.org

My gDsci0019reatest pleasure of all was meeting and working with all of the participants. The queer participants instantly teamed up and formed alliances with each other with me as the den mother guiding them around SF and Oakland. We went at ate a lovely places, danced at the good clubs and laughed, cried and shared with each other like family always does. Instead of doing roll call here I will feature each artist for the next 2 months with their bios, and samples of their work for you to enjoy. You will discover their talent and their love for the craft of writing as I have. Look forward to meeting all of them.

As youDsci0010_7 should know by now I have a monthly party called "Livingroom" its a cool place to let your hair down groove and chill. Its a step up from a house party but it keeps that vibe alive and true. No dress code, late night, good drinks and the best tamales ever. We cater to a very diverse crowd who appreciates something different and something new. Our goal is to promote the queer artist, to create a space for queers and their friends to hang out and be free. I'd like to see each and every one of you theDsci0005_3re on the second friday of the month. Come and give me a hug when  you see me I'll be working the door or the dancefloor either way you won't be dissappointed.

"Warning this is not your average club, no top 40 music, no 50 Cent, no drama, no stress. This club is alternative(house music, drum and base, old school hip hop, soulful house). We include everyone gay, straight, bi, trans, with that said come with an open heart and and open mind and you will Dsci0003 experience an beautiful time.  If you are looking for a meat market, bootyshaking strippers and hify youngins you got the wrong party."
