SHAN-G THE SOUL SINGER

Shang She came to me after a SistahSpit Spoken word show and assured me that she was good. As ya'll know I hear that all the time, so I set a date for a meeting to hear what she has to offer. I couldn't beleive it was her! She like this soft spoken almost tiny person who you has this loud and demanding vocal that speaks soul and passion. We started to listen to some random cuts while she started to search for a specific CD and I started to groove to what was playing.  When I asked who it was she said proudly "Thats me!" All I could do was sit there with my mouth wide open. She played cut after cut singing each song right there on the spot to the beats she created and mixed herself. So this singer, song writer and producer also ads retired welder to her long line of credits.  "I want to make music so I can pay to print the memoir I wrote that entails my life story."

What else can this woman do? What I do know about her is that she moved here in '97 from Virginia escaping a past from hell which included abandonment, homelessness and an attempt on her life.  While struggling through the storm she discovered that music would be her salvation and her future.

She has her own lable called Mo'Funk 4-U Records and Another Lonley Night is the current release featuring a compilation of songs that have been in the making for years.  Look for her at The White Party Butta's 2nd Anniversary Party. July 17th at 3:30pm.

Valarie83_1 Peace in Progress

This month at the La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley, a debut will be made by one of the soon-to-be musical phenomenon’s associated with the Bay Area. Her name is Valerie Troutt (aka Ayana Bluhm) and what she has in store will amaze, bring to tears and inspire us to new heights as we watch her ascend from one of the bays best kept secrets to her rightful place as one of the music industries most lauded singer/songwriters. The Bay Area at large has historically been the birthplace for many critically acclaimed musical acts.

Tower of Power and Tony Toni Tone for instance, bear witness to the fact that the rest of the nation has long looked to the bay as an indicator to set the new trends and industry standards. Now with the overwhelming success of relative new comers such as Ledisi and Goapele, the bay is once again poised to offer up yet another native daughter to the illustrious roster of musical greats nurtured by the bays diverse audiences.

The East Bay native who left home in search of her own path has returned from her seven year stint in New York City a graduate of the jazz studies program at the New School University and emerged as a seasoned composer and song stylist full of tastefully daring lyricism, dynamic storytelling and a sultry yet precise way of delivering melodies that can either reveal your own fears to the point of tears or just as effortlessly return you to unyielding faith with the deceptive turn of a phrase and a wink. With guitar around neck, piano in reach and microphone practically born in hand this alarmingly stoic figure has deemed herself as one of the artists that can only be categorized in the growing genre known as “eclectic soul”.

The May 18th performance entitled "A Peace in Progress" is a collection of works bound together by hard times, love and the promise of peace. This Oakland girl along with HBO Def Poetry Jam performer ButtaFlySoul and dancer/choreographer Rashad Pridgen will bring to the stage not only daring and soulful vocals, but will also include movement and verse accompanied by bassist David Ewell, Guitarist Sean Lehe, and drummer Leo Costa . Valerie will sing original compositions in addition to some fantastically rearranged jazz standards. The show is FREE and open to the public. A $10 suggested donation. FEMALES CAME TO WORK IT OUT...

If you didn't make it to "Lip" the all female MC Battle you missed out. Beautiful women came out of the wood work for this one. It was a true testiment to what womenMendocino_026_1 in the bay can do when they work together. The crowd was warm, friendly and very diverse. They all came to see the Fiery Feline Medusa come to rip the stage apart. The Battle it self had many of us asking questions like why is the sound messin' up and why didn't they battle longer and who was responsible for the topics they picked. People kept asking me like had something to do with the show. Interesting...anyway everything worked its self out and the show went on. The show was hosted by the talented Sis-Nau-T. I loved how she handled the stage and kept things rollin. Her perfessionalism is something other host can learn from. AlMendocino_022_1l the women in the battle were great perfomers. I feel bad that some of them left early because I wasn't able to get names of some of the contenders but this sexy stud stood still long enough so that I could take her picture. The Winner of the Battle was Oaklands Sweetheart Yamz(Aima) of the Mamaz the female rap Duo. She went up against some heavy hittaz and shut them all down with the sweet sting of her lyrical tounge. She never said a curse word (some of the good MC's got disqualified for that) and she kept and maintained her composure for each woman she went up against. I'm so proud to call her one of my friends but I'm even more proud to say that she is a good represeMendocino_019ntation of females in Hip Hop. She is not sellin' ass or a gangsta mentality. Overall the show wore me out because my drink was very strong (that's not a complaint, its a compliment) and my eyes hurt cuz there was so many beautiful women especially the one I came with ; ) . The highlight of the show was when Medusa went into a freestyle and she brought the Special One to the stage from The Conscious Daughters. She did her thang. Then Olga T got on the turntables with some dancehall. It took all the power in me to stay sittin down during that music. My boots meeter ran out and all I could do was sip my cocktail and watch but it was still cool to be hanging out. I spent a lot of time exchanging numbers and catching up with old friends. It was truly worth my $24 dollars ( I paid for me and my lady friend) eventhough my star stauts should've had me on the list. I won't pout or shout I just hope the same people remember to bring their wallets when my events drop this spring/summer. Look out the Best B.U.S.H. is gonna bring it ! "Succulent" and dance club for singles is coming... SistahSpit Spoken Word Series in April at Butta....Crookaletta(Queer Spoken Word Annual Event) in the Queer Arts Festival this summer and "A Piece in Progress"  at La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley May 18th Featuring Valarie Troutt(http://www.valerietroutt.com), ButtaflySoul(Def Poetry Jam) and Rashad Pridgen(Black Choreographers Festival).

Welcome

Welcome to B.U.S.H. Magazine!

Here I will blab on an on about the artist I know and work with.

Black_1

Beautifully,Strong,Urban,Heroines is a publication I've been working on for the past 9months and I have thought of a thousand ways to get information out to the public about queer artist of color. They exsist and they deserve the same recognition that all other artist take for granted. No,not all of the artist I book are queer. Yes, the focus will be on artist of color. Yes, I have the capacity to work with more artist. If you have more questions email me and I'd be glad to answer.

Look forward to me introducing yall to some of the most talented people in the world. I get the honor of calling them my friends, associates and co-workers. You will call them your inspiration, your muse, your feel good music and your spare time interest. Whatever the case you will recieve them as I have, to be talented and worthy of our readership, listeningship and patronage. We offer this token to them as appreciation for the talent  that they allow us to experience in this life.

Whew....now that I've said all the mushy shit lets get down and dirty.

The first artist I'd like to share with you is Valerie Troutt aka Ayanna Bloomh her voice is soothing like silk on soft skin, comforting like hot grits on a cold morning and sweet like a lovers kiss before bed. Now don't just take my word for it. Go to her site and see for yourself. Then come back here and I'll tell you all about a show she's having in the Bay area soon.
