Trans March 2007

Friday June 22nd, the Friday before Pride
Dolores Park, Dolores and 19th Street

Transmarch

*3pm Stage*  7pm March

The Trans March is a grassroots, social change event organized entirely by community volunteers. You are welcome to get involved to make this year's event even better!

San Francisco's first, historic Trans March in 2004 attracted a crowd estimated at 2,000. Last year's Trans March brought together 5,000-6,000 people for an amazing community-driven grassroots demonstration on the weekend of LGBT Pride. This year, we expect over 10,000 transgender people and allies, making it the largest transgender event in history!

The Trans March is intended to:

  • Demonstrate that the violence and discrimination directed against the transgender community will not be tolerated.
  • Celebrate the struggles of the trans community for respect, acceptance, and civil rights.
  • Build a supportive, unified trans community bringing together diverse genders, ages, and ethnic backgrounds along with our allies.

The entire event will be sign-language interpreted! Please enhance, translate and pass this on to any groups, lists, or individuals who might be interested.

The Trans March is produced by over 50 grassroots community volunteers, with primary sponsorship from: Good Vibrations, National Center for Lesbian Rights, United Genders of the Universe! Horizons Foundation, San Francisco Arts Commission Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and co-sponsorship by: Walden House, FTM International, SEIU Local 790, Fresh Meat Productions, Eros, Femina Potens, Queer Cultural Center, San Francisco LGBT Community Center, SF LGBT Pride Committee, and the Dyke March!

Calling all transfolks, friends, allies and admirers!

We are calling for this march to demonstrate that we are a significant and growing portion of the lgbtiq community; to increase our visibility and presence in the tgiqlb community and the overall community at large; to encourage more trans and gender-variant people to come out; to build connections among ftm, mtf, bayot, crossdressers, sadhin, hijra, transvestites, bantut, drag queens, drag kings, mahu, transsexuals, bakla, travesti, genderqueers, kathoey, two spirit, intersex and those with other labels for themselves and no labels for themselves, those who see gender as having more than two options, and those who live between the existing options; to support one another as a community, through all of our struggles; to speak out against violence, hate, transphobia, and the oppression of any and all of us under the existing social structure; and to be fabulous and powerful in the company of others that are fabulous and powerful.

Your Pride Guide

Bkpride Pride time can be a fun experience or a nightmare. Take our advice for the perfect pride experience

Have a Picnic at Delores Park, March in the Dyke March, Go to the Castro for an hour or two then find an After Party.

*Never Drive to Pride: traffic is impossible, parking is non-existent, you might be too drunk to drive later.

*Wear Comfortable shoes: even if you don’t do the whole march I guarantee you will end up walking a lot.

*If you have a friend who lives in

San Francisco

:  plan to sleepover

If you can afford it rent a room in

San Francisco

for the night with a few friends

Bpride *Plan to go with at least one other person: going solo could be fun at first but after awhile you need some one to take your picture with the hot girls.

*Go to the bathroom before you have to go badly. Go inside restaurants if they make you buy something have your friend pay while you wait in the bathroom line, let the port-a-potty be your last resort.

*Prepare and pack light: bring a backpack, I.D., cash, a snack, moist towlettes, camera (disposable), cell phone, a jacket with a hood for later.

*A pen and a pad (you might meet that one) This is a great time to connect with others. Different groups and organizations will be represented and you n\might want to check them out when prides over.

March_1 *Have a get home plan

If taking BART over buy a return ticket first. If you run out of money at least you can get back home.

*The best After Parties are house parties so f you hear of one check it out. If the party is boring simply slip out and go the at least one of the big parties on our pride party list.

The executive director of NQAF 2006 is Pamela Peniston, a twenty-year resident of San Francisco and former producer for Good Morning America, whose current duties also include overseeing the Creating Queer Community commissioning program which awards grants to artists.

Beyond the mission of NQAF is the purpose, and Pam Peniston explains,"For me, it's about connecting audiences with the art created by their own communities, inspiring the next generation of artists, presenting quality work at an affordable price so that all audiences can experience it, and reaching out to both queer and non-queer communities and institutions and helping them to acknowledge and celebrate queer artists. It's all about art, however you may define it, wherever you may find it."
